The Wiener schnitzel – not only the most famous Austrian meal, but also still the most popular: The Austrians eat 30 (!) schnitzels on average per year, it’s a must at Granny’s on Sunday. But of course, also the tourists have to taste it at least once. The name Wiener Schnitzel has existed since the 19th century but the recipe probably came from Italy to Austria in the 14th or 15th century. The Wiener Schnitzel is originally made with veal, but pork is often used too – what’s better is a matter of taste. The breadcrumb coating consists of flour, breadcrumbs and eggs, after the breading, the schnitzel must be beat before being deep-fried.
If you come to Vienna and want to taste Wiener schnitzel, must visit the Figlmüller. The Figlmüller family has been offering extra crunchy schnitzel in their restaurants for over hundred years. The schnitzel is especially appreciated by tourists and regularly leads to long queues in front of the entrance.
